Decoding the legacy of dog whistle politics

Prior to the midterm elections of 2014, constitutional law scholar and author Ian Haney López showed how conservative politicians, think tanks and media have used coded racism—dog whistles—as a strategy to win white votes. For more than fifty years, this strategy has been successful in electing conservative politicians and tarnishing the brand of government, while laying the foundation for Donald Trump’s electoral success in 2016.

With an eye toward developing new and creative opportunities, we leveraged the release of Ian’s book Dog Whistle Politics to reach select musicians, community leaders, film and television producers, and other authors with this deeper understanding of how race operates in contemporary American politics. We also handled press logistics and media outreach for Ian leading up to the midterms, including appearances on Melissa Harris Perry on MSNBC and PoliticKING with Larry King. STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS / MEDIA PLANNING / POP STRATEGY
